How to Write ECQs That Get Results

Writing ECQs might seem overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can create narratives that showcase your leadership skills and elevate your SES application. Here’s how to get started.

Step 1: Use the CCAR Framework

Start by breaking down your accomplishments into four parts: Challenge, Context, Action, and Result. This structure keeps your ECQs clear and results-focused. I’ve helped clients transform generic statements into powerful stories using this method.

Step 2: Highlight Results In Each ECQ

Agencies want to see measurable outcomes. For example, when assisting a healthcare leader with her ECQs, we emphasized how her initiatives reduced patient wait times by 20% and increased staff satisfaction. Highlighting quantifiable results makes your leadership impact clear and compelling.

When writing about results, don’t be afraid to include secondary outcomes as well. For instance, if your project not only saved costs but also improved team morale, include both points. This helps paint a fuller picture of your leadership capabilities.

Step 3: Use a Personal Yet Professional Tone Across All ECQs

Your ECQs are professional documents, but that doesn’t mean they have to be dry. Adding a personal touch—such as briefly mentioning your motivation for tackling a challenge—can make your narratives more engaging. For instance, I recently worked with a client whose passion for veterans’ healthcare led her to implement a groundbreaking program in her agency. Including this detail helped demonstrate her genuine commitment to her role.

Step 4: Proofread and Edit Carefully

Even small errors can detract from your application’s professionalism. After drafting your ECQs, take the time to review them or hire a professional for a final polish. The OPM is meticulous about application standards, so typos and formatting issues can hurt your chances. Tools like Grammarly can help with basic edits, but nothing beats a thorough review by an experienced editor.
